for someone who's never learned to read tarot is it hard to learn?

It isn't hard if you are into it. It's just like studying any other art. I consider myself a forever beginner, beginner's mind, never stop learning. There are LOTS of resources out there. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend the Thoth Tarot for a true beginner, though. The symbology is complex and the deck is mystical. There is a short explanation of each card in the manual it comes with, but I would start with a more simplistic deck so you can start to really understand the different archetypes and meanings behind each card. It's also good to experiment with different decks until you find one that speaks to you. ;)
