This is maddening. I keep getting outbid - instantly. Is the bid accurate and show in real-time? I keep buying credits thinking my next bid will end up being the highest. This is a problem. I don't think one should have to purchase the credits until after one's won the auction. Now I have $70 worth of credits I don't know what to do with. Grrrr...

Listia, to prevent sniping, automatically extend the auction for 5 minutes anytime there is a bid at the last minute.

It seems like you guys could get a refund for your credits if you do it before a week is up

I wouldn't mind bidding on it if I could buy the credits once I won the item, or at least charge the credit card only when/if I win the item.
I don't want to end up with $100 of credits that I won't use. Any way to do this? I don't want to have to go through the return system if I don't win

Have you looked at Swoopo much? I believe they automatically extend the auctions. You're the anti-Swoopo, basically, but having the auctions extend at the end makes it more entertaining than allowing for sniping, which is mostly just annoying.

I listed an item to sell, but there is no iplace for me to list shipping costs or pick up arrangements it if someone wins it. Who pays for it to be sent- the seller or the buyer and how is paid? Credits, paypal, cash?or is this all for local pickup only? thanks.

i would edit listing to say what you are willing to do, people shouldnt assume u would ship.. i mean, who is gonna pay for that?

Free shipping only really works for items that cost <$10 to ship (some people won't even cough up $5 for a few points). I think as people use this website more:
1> They'll figure out exactly how much their credits are worth (doesn't matter that you can buy 500 for $50 that doesn't really mean its worth $50)
2> that free shipping is a distant dream

Can you please explain the charity aspect of this auction? You state that 60% of profits will be donated to charity, but how do you qualify "profit"? If I bid and win using credits that I have freely obtained, where is the revenue and the profit? Are users allowed to convert credits into cash? As I write this, the high bid is 801 credits. Does that mean 480.6 (60%) credits go to charity? What is a credit? I don't understand.

Thanks guys to all who answered my questions about shipping. I'll offer free shipping if it's not to much to send in order to get the points from buyers...otherwise I'll have to rely on my local floridians finding this site. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Also, great question above about the charity. I started to do that so that a percentage went to it, but who picks the charity and more. I'm sure this is all a work in progress and we'll all help figure it out. In the meantime, i think it's a cool concept. Like Ebay and Freecycle combined. Yippee.

Who picks the charity and how the funds are transferred and verified is one issue, the larger issue is a 60% of WHAT? Credits counted as profit? But what is the monetary value of credit and how is profit determined? The site has no information on this.

I find it interesting I was trying to signup yesterday and kept getting 404 errors, I get signed up today and instead of 500 free credits get 100. Fail.

rayrayangel, I believe you need to list something to get the rest of the promotional credits.

If Listia is really geared toward auctioning "free" stuff (that's another issue), then proxy bidding only hurts the bidders.

The rules should be:

1) No proxy bids - you want an item, you spend the time to bid on it (part of the excitement of a REAL auction is the last-minute action);

2) Implement a "Going once... going twice..." approach that would work like this: An auction initially has a set expire date/time. One minute before the end, we get a "Going once...". Thirty seconds before we get a "Going twice..." If no other bids come in before the expire time, the auction ends. If a bid is placed after "Going once" or "Going twice" , the one-minute clock is reset.
