The images on the Mexican Silver Libertad coin date back to the nation’s celebration of the centennial of its War of Independence with Spain. Fed up with Spanish oppression, the Mexican people fought back in 1820. In 1920, the Mexican Mint issued a gold Centenario coin featuring the winged Angel of Independence and national coat of arms.

Introduced in 1982, the Mexican Silver Libertad coin series reintroduces both images to Mexican currency using stunning, modern minting technology. On the obverse side of the Mexican Silver Libertad coin is the image of the Angel of Independence, featured atop a pillar in the center of the coin. Her image is surrounded by inscriptions bearing the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.

The reverse side of the coin features various depictions of the coat of arms of Mexico throughout the nation’s history. In the center, the modern coat of arms is depicted, surrounded by a wreath and the phrase “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”

Originally founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1535 to refine gold found in the Americas, the Mexican Mint is an entity of the federal government in Mexico. The Mint first struck Silver Libertads in 1982, redesigning the reverse design in the mid-1990s.
