Very rare old 1870/1890 era steel engraved picture of Abraham Lincoln with engraved autograph. The picture is heavier paper with some browning due to age and small brown age spot near middle of right side. The picture is 5 1/2 inches wide and 9 1/2 inches long. It is not been matted or framed. A truly unique historical item for the Civil War or Lincoln collector on this 150 anniversary of the Civil War.

Today copies of old steel engraved plate photos are either copy machine copies or printed copies of older pictures done on rotary presses or more modern presses. Steel engraved pictures tended to be printed literally one at a time.in the late 1800's.

I have been told that this could have possibly been printed shortly after the assassination in 1865. The age of the paper clearly is from prior to 1890 but how much earlier I can only guess. Best guess is around 1875 give or take five or ten years? The estimate of around 1865 is due to the sharpness of the engraving. As more and more are printed, the sharpness of the lines disappears so clearly an early engraving from the steel plate.

This is an original print from a steel engraved plate, it is not a copy. The copies are photostats of originally prints. This is an original print from sometime between 1865 and 1890 as I explained above.

Thank you and good luck. Steel engraved pictures went out of fashion about 1890 as photographs replaced engraved pictures. The age of the paper would indicate sometime around 1875--give or take 10 years. Engraved pictures of Lincoln popularity was strong until the election U.S. Grant when Civil War items declined in popularity. Glass negatives of Civil War subjects at that time were used to make greenhouses or scraped so more than likely the print is from a time prior or shortly after the election of Grant.

The item being auctioned is pictured here. It appears darker in the above photo as I wanted to be sure that slight age browning on right side was noted. Actual picture i on whiter paper than appear in picute here.

The steel engraved plate pictures were sold as "printed art portraits" or "printed art scenes" individually. Some were printed for expensive, limited edition books of that era of history.

I still don't understand if this is a copy of a picture or an original?
I looked for some online and found this one for $8.00 on a website and it was copy.

So this is a copy of a picture. Not actually signed by Lincoln, but a copy of one that has the original signature? What is steel engraved? I am not familiar with this stuff.
