Most people do not try to cover the Mah Jongg image, but use it facing out as part of a brooch, pendant, or bracelet. The image is actually carved into the face of the tile. The reverse could be painted or stamped. I used alcohol inks on the face of a tile similar to these to make it appear vintage for a special pendant.

what material are they? glass, plastic or wood? could they be used for mosaics?

These are brand new, so they are not made of the vintage materials. I'm guessing that the face (the engraved part) is a modern polymer (plastic) and most of the rest is lucite (they are clear in the middle). Some have a solid colored back; most have a layer of lucite over a fancy thin layer (sparkling, plaid, etc.). I don't know what your constraints are for mosaics, so I can't speak to that, but I think they might be okay. They are fairly chunky (about 1/2" thick), so if you're thinking of embedding them in concrete or mortar, take that into consideration. I don't know that the paint used in the engraving would hold up outside, but I imagine it could be easily touched up if it fades. Does that answer your question? Thanks for looking!
