Description

The listing, Sun Dial / Necklace - Unique Piece has ended.

Do you ever find yourself at a medieval reenactment asking for the time?

Well ask no more. Be the wench or knave of the party, with this beautiful personal sundial.

Made of brass and what appears to be pewter, this personal sundial is pretty damn accurate, especially if you find yourself unable to look up at the sun because of a sword injury.

How it works:

Simply turn the inner dial to the correct month (shown by letters on the outer surface), and then holding the dial by the string perpendicular to the earth. The sun will shine through the hole (see photograph) and accurately tell the time by shining through and highlighting one of the numbers within the inner portion of the ring.

This was purchased at The Feast of the Hunter's Moon in Lafayette Indiana many moons ago. It is of excellent craftsmanship. It is also an exquisite piece of jewelry that not only compliments your costume, it's functional....uh on sunny days only that is.

Tips for best performance:

It will be an hour off during daylight savings time *raises angry fist to Ben Franklin* and as you get closer to another month, move the brass ring accordingly to correct the time if it is off. You'll get the hang of operating it eventually.

Not Pictured: Inscription opposite the numbers inside is the Latin phrase "Carpe Diem" or Seize the Day. Apropos right?

Size: Dial is approximately 1.25" across. Polished cotton string from which it hangs is adjustable from 24" to 32".

Weight: About the weight of 10 U.S. quarters.

I never wear it, and it should be worn. It deserves better than to sit useless in my jewelry box. Please give it a good home.

I'm still a little confused as to how this sundial works, could you explain it abit more?

Basically you hold it out away from your body so that the sun light can show through the pin hole on the outside ring. The light goes through the hole and marks the time (numbers are inscribed on the inside). The time is set correctly based on the position of the earth in relativity to the sun or in simpler terms, each month of the year we're a certain distance and angle away from the sun. The dial in the center of the necklace corrects these distances by shifting the angle of the pinhole from the sun directly (there are 6 slots to move the dial representing the months(they're doubled up) ). Sorry if that seems too complicated.

From looking online I found this: Apparently it is made but not in great numbers as some of the online stores are out of stock. Hmmm...it's a reproduction from a sundial made for Henry Plantagenet (King Henry II) of England given to him by Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152. Made in Canada -PHEW! At least it doesn't say China. It's still unique in my opinion, because not everyone thinks to purchase such an item.

Do you know if this was a handcrafted item? It seems way too unqiue to be mass produced.

The way it was presented to me was from a small collection at a fair (Feast of the Hunter's Moon). There weren't many too choose from and it was around 40$. I don't think the booth I purchased it from was in any way connected to the company or artist(s) that produced this because they were selling other non jewelry related items too....clothing etc.

Would 1st class be cheaper than priority to canada...I have no idea. If so, I'd do it that way too. Priority mail was just cheaper to look up.
