When you add detergent to hard water, some of the compounds attach to the calcium and magnesium granules that settle on the bottom of your washing machine, eventually retreating down the drain without actually cleaning your clothes. 20 Mule Team Borax softens hard water, and maximizes your cleaning power! You only need to add 1/2 cup of Borax to your laundry load.

Borax can also be used to make silly putty. This is simple and fun, plus kids love it!

How to make silly putty:

Elmer’s Glue (8 oz bottle)
Borax
Large mixing bowl
Plastic cup
Spoon
Measuring cup
Food coloring (optional)
Water
Zipper-lock bag (don’t you want to keep it when you’re done?)

Empty the entire bottle of glue into a mixing bowl. Fill the empty bottle with warm water and shake. Pour the glue-water mixture into the mixing bowl and use the spoon to mix well.

Optional...add a drop or two of food coloring.

Measure 1/2 cup of warm water into the plastic cup and add a teaspoon of Borax powder to the water. Stir the solution – don’t worry if all of the powder dissolves.

While stirring the glue in the mixing bowl, slowly add a little of the Borax solution. It’s time to abandon the spoon and use your hands to do the serious mixing. Keep adding the Borax solution to the glue mixture (don’t stop mixing) until you get a perfect batch of silly putty.

Play with it then seal it up in a zipper-lock bag for safe keeping. A GREAT SUMMER TIME ACTIVITY FOR KIDS!!!
