Not all shell cameos were portraits of individual people, I am not sure where you read that as being the history of them but that isn't entirely true. There were a lot of cameos produced of mythological figures, random ladies profiles, religious icons and various other things. They all however are unique and no two are exactly alike, as they were hand carved and no two would be exactly alike based on that factor alone. I have a book on everything about cameos and cameo identification that has 20 or so chapters on everything from the history of cameos (which dates back much further than shell cameos being produced) to modern made shell cameos that are cut by lasers using machines instead of hand carving. Not all cameos were originally made of shell. Some of the first very very old (museum quality) ones were carved out of much harder natural stones and precious gems. Shell was used later on starting I think in the 1800's (could be remembering wrong), because the carvers discovered, it was much easier to carve shell being that it is a softer material than say a ruby would be, which some of the museum quality very old ones were made with rubies. They also were able to get the tone tone effect with shell they couldn't get with all natural stone. Anyway I have collected cameos for about 10 years now. I have several different antique/vintage hand carved shell cameos as well as glass intaglios (reverse cameos), vintage costume cameos, and modern cameos made out of onyx and opal and onyx and MOP. Anyway fanned and watching and yes the mass produced plastic ones do not even come close to comparing.

Yes i was surprised to find out the history on cameos if they are old they were hand carved of a person who paid to have portrait done that must mean each one is a different person .not like today were they just make thousands of of plastic

You are welcome. I have always loved shell cameos so much personally, because each one tells a story from a time long before mine, and each story they tell is different. I may list the cameo book I have on here at some point. It is a great reference book for collectors or dealers.
