Description

The listing, Abalone shells pieces has ended.

These are a group of abalone shells for making natural jewelry. If you do buy these wear a mask or drill them outside, Abalone is toxic when breathing the dust. I would also recommend wearing gloves. if you are just wrapping them with wire , it isn't a problem.

yes, of course, Buster Houdini, I had a friend in college she took a semester off went to California to do Abalone jewelry, but no body told here to wear a mask she very nearly died. And I almost lost my closest friend!! I never would have guessed it either, but often the most beautiful things can also be deadly. Just use proper ventilation and masks , you'll be fine. Also there are safety guidelines about jewelry making and art. I'm an artist and so many things, even natural are dangerous, like marble contains silicia, which it like glass threads , when you inhale it , it sticks to your lungs for good. I carved marble , I 've done marble mosaics, and cut tile, I'm still alive, but it's a slow thing, unlike abalone the dust is far more dangerous when drilling. It's 100% safe to wear, but only the dust is deadly.

Yes, I like your profile pic, too! Lol! I think possibly poachers, but a lot of it it Global warming which make the algae bloom that kills the Abalone

Also read Wiki's page on Abalone! It's fascinating! The worst part is they predict Abalone will be extinct within 200 yrs because of Dioxins, but worst of all some other sea creature is also killing off as much as 90% in some places(some types of sealife such as algae and nasty jellyfish are rapidly thriving with the warmer climate, and don't mind pollutants! Unfortunately they aren't the good things! Abalone has been used for sashimi for thousands of yrs. The biggest abalone was 12" !!! Imagine that!! (I wish it was mine!I also wish I had bought one I saw years ago, that was about 10" !!) So, my point is more and more are no longer available to catch. In Calif you can only take 24 a year, and only the Red Abalone, none of the others. So understand these shells will be no more as time goes on. They are going extinct. Which is a shame.
