This is a beautiful Genuine Austrailian necklace! The chain is about 19" long and stamped 925. I got this necklace 10 years ago from a neighbor who had relatives in Andamooka Austrailia and they would come to Minnesota and sell their opals, my neighbor would put opals in rings and necklaces. I used to wear it all the time and got many compliments, The picture does not do it justice! I have never seen another opal like it or even close. Yeah I tried getting as close as I could, but the closer I got the more blurry it got! I guess my camera isn't that great.

chances are it is just tarnished. As a jewelry maker, I know that some sterling will get a gold cast from the oils in your skin.

I don't think it looks tarnished but you can clean with with jewelry cleaner and see. I would do it but we are moving and I packed up the jewelry cleaner.

You say the chain is stamped 925 but the picture it looks gold. Is it gold or silver? I love opals and collect them and I'd love to have this but I can't wear gold. So I'm crossing my fingers while I wait for your answer.

It is called vermeil. gold plated over sterling.

UPDATE: My husband went to get his books for college today because he goes back in January and he took the necklace to a Jewler and he said it is STERLING SILVER. Just not sure why it looks gold.

i will be watching but u might do some resurch on that y it would be marked that and b another or just take it to ur local jewler they will look at it for free and tell you what it is and you will get beter points on here knowing ;).
