"Shrub or small tree, 4-15ft high. Twigs and leafstalks hairy. Fruits are hairy, red, and arranged in a pyramidal structure. Fruits present June through September. Autumn leaves are deep red. Often found in dry, rocky soils.
Native Americans used fruits in cough syrup. Gargled for sore throat and tonsillitis. Root bark used as an astringent and to staunch bleeding.

It is very pretty in the summer and still a focal point through fall and into winter. Even now, though our temperatures have been mostly below zero for days, the female trees are still holding on to those red seed pods.

Yes folks, you can make lemonade with staghorn sumac. However, those with nut allergies beware! Sumac is closely related to cashews and will cause the same reaction.

Sumac is called POISON sumac in the north east. It's like poison ivy and poison oak. I can't believe people are PURPOSELY planting these! Please don't spread this plant around the country!!! People up here break out in terrible rashes because of these trees

Poison Sumac is from the same family but a different genus and species than staghorn sumac and smooth sumac. The difference in the appearance of the fruits are a dead giveaway. Here is a link with pictures of poison sumac in fruit: http://ontariotrees.com/main/species.php?id=2079
And no worries, I'm sure you were taught to stay away from anything called sumac.
