I had it stored away and did not use it for more than 4 months and I turned it on and it an nearly a full charge. So I say it's battery if rather new.

Do I need to install RCA software or can I just use Windows Media Player and use it like the average mp3?

I think the rca software is only for converting video to work on the player. I never used the video for that reason. Putting songs on it is just like putting music onto a usb flash drive.
