Tales of supernatural beings consuming the blood or flesh of the living have been associated with some kind of revenant, demon, devil, spirit, witch or deity in nearly every culture around the world for centuries back to prehistoric times. Many theories have been proposed to explain the cultural roots of vampire lore such as premature burial, early ignorance of the body's decomposition cycle after death and even the ravages of consumption (tuberculosis). Today, we call them vampires, but in ancient times, the term vampire did not exist. However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula that is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and which provides the basis of modern vampire fiction. The emphasis upon the evils of carnal sexuality and lust-driven behaviors in Dracula were shocking to Victorian society, but they enjoyed the book anyway. Count Dracula posed many threats to Victorian social, moral and political values: he changes virtuous women into beasts with ravenous sexual appetites; he is a foreigner who invades England and threatens English superiority; he is the embodiment of evil that can only be destroyed by reasserting the beliefs of traditional Christianity in an increasingly skeptical and secular age; he represents the fear of regression, a reversal of evolution, a return to our more primal animal state. Vampires once represented a fear of sexuality, now they have became inspirational role models.
