Description

The listing, Elephant pastel 5x7 Print has ended.

Mr. Elephant's breakfast time at the Dallas Zoo. This pachyderm stood still for quite a while, stuffing its mouth with food from its trunk. This gentle beast seemed to enjoy the attention it got from myself and my classmates as we sketched and pastelled him.

This is one of my dry media artworks. They are sometimes called "paintings" or "drawings", but the word "Pastel" is the only correct word. As a noun or verb.
Dry pastel (powdered pigment crayons) is my medium of choice. Unlike many traditional practitioners, I don't go for the delicate lightness of the smudgy artform. I love the bright, vibrant colors to capture the moment with a sense of electricity. And as with this piece, I occasionally grab that black stick and go nuts with it (Hey, I'm a fan of charcoal too).

Ready for any standard frame or matte at 5x7 inches.

You are too funny! Love this piece too! Huge fan of elephants. So you use chalk pastels or oil?

Dry pastels. We don't use the "C" word. Chalks are great for driveways, where pastels are banned from sidewalk chalk festivals. It is a pure powdered pigment. My dog ate a dry pastel recently... can you imagine what it did to ... well.... ? Oil pastels are a newer medium, and while they are lots of fun, they aren't quite the quality of color. I have had some fun with them. I smear them, where I don't really do that with the dry stuff as much.

My college classes were just up the DART rail from the Zoo, so we took a few trips... with class and as lone artist groups.
