A solid opal is just that: all stone, a doublet is a small slice of opal with a clear dome over the top, and a triplet is a really thin sliver of opal with a dark material underneath and a clear dome on top of it.You will find a lot of gorgeous color play in a triplet stone due to the dark background and because such a minute piece of opal is required (typically of a more expensive variety like black opal).

Hope this helps! :) I'm definitely still learning as well, to be honest, so you should check out one of the opal lover sites out there for more cool info! There is a lot to learn about opals, for sure!

Is this a real opal or lab created?

I THINK it is a lab-created stone, but please don't take that as gospel. The body color of this stone makes me think it is created...then I rotate it just so and find a random flash of red-pink that is unlike anything I have ever seen a lab produce! Unfortunately, I am presently without the proper loupe to determine for sure.

Even if it is lab-created, tho, it is no less a 'real' opal - the composition is the same as one removed from the earth. Some even prefer lab opals because they are far easier to care for than a mined opal (less chance of cracking, crazing, etc.).

But I honestly cannot answer with certainty on this piece, sorry. It's a lovely ring either way - especially for the price - and I'm sure your local jeweler or gemologist would gladly loupe it for you if you have interest. :)
