This is an old ashtray from the 40's or 50's! My mother had 2 small ones. The closed lid reduced odors & ensured that butts were safely extinguished. The handle allowed the smoker to carry it around without being burned & for easy, less smelly emptying! They were also home decor & great fun for me to play with as a child. This was, of course, much to my Mother's displeasure as she would say "Shooowee, don't play with that dirty thing & put it back!"
PS: Google found the name I couldn't remember. It's a "SILENT BUTLER"! There are some great images shown (none as cute as yours!). Also the little knob allowed the smoker to easily open it with their thumb. Wonder if it might be repurposed for a small scented wax Tea Light? Thanks for your sweet replies!
Actually these are not "ash trays", but it is a " silent butler /waiter". It is an ash can, that the butler/waiter/hostess would carry around to silently EMPTY the ash trays. Bed warmers had a long handle so that the servant or whomever could warmer the bed without pulling back the covers. And it was smooth all around so it would glide between the sheets, because you couldn't leave it in the bed , It would have caught fire.. no heat retardant in those days.
