They are annuals in zones 3-7 and perennials in zones 7-10. You can propagate by seed but nick the seed and soak in warm water overniote before planting. Then plant 1/2 deep and keep moist. will appear in 7-14 days. They are a vine and love sun so give them something to grow on. Very big, reach heights up to 20 feet and plant them 12-14 inches apart. collect seed pods from plant, let dry and break open, seeds are large, size of kernals of corn. The seeds are POISONOUS if ingested. Very neat to watch open if your lucky to see it, very dramatic as they open quickly! They stay open till the morning sun touches them. Any other question, just ask!
