Description

The listing, Antique Italian Brass Whale Oil Lamp w/ finial has ended.

This is an antique brass lamp made in Italy (see 2nd pic of label on bottom) . I don't know what it was used for , but it has a pair of scissors and other "tools" that fit into three "spouts" or handles attached by chains, it's really different! Reminds me of a Genie Magic lamp! And maybe one of a very few! (I know I've never seen one like it!) . It holds two bulbs and the ceramic bulb holder looks fairly new.. Ty for looking and please check out all of my auctions! Please NOTE "No Paypal! " , I only take Postal Money orders or Concealed cash for shipping . In over 150 auctions I've had no problems, if you have concerns and you are the winner, include tracking and insurance on your shipping payment. Ty for looking and please check out all of my auctions (I do combined shipping , so long as the smaller item fits safely in with the larger one , and the Price is based on the larger item). Please feel free to ask questions!
Update.: One commentator below has pointed out , this is a whale oil lamp , which I looked up , and it does seem that is the case. It has been electrified, so there is a drilled hole through the base, The upper sections are all movable, and there is a crack in one of the upper sections. (It had to be drilled to fit the wire , it could be restored, but I would leave it and rewire it, and use it as a functional /decorative piece). Scooter is right it would fall under "Nautical" items, which are highly desirable. Therefore a price adjustment has been made. (it is still quite reasonably priced, compared to similar counterparts)

This is not a whale oil lamp it looks more like a Hookah (Opium) Pipe base. Still turn of the 19th century and very collectible. I am an antique whale and kerosene lamp collector and can tell with 98% accuracy that this is Not a whale oil lamp. Sorry, but this would be a great conversation piece anyway.

Well if you look on the internet under "Brass Whale Oil lamps, you maybe in for a rude shock! I was surprised too! Apparently tons of people refer to this as A Whale oil Lamps, in fact one nearly identical just sold on Ebay for $100(or $99). It's not me who says that's what it is , I really didn't know til someone here told me! I said the same thing but she is right! Look for yourself! I can send you a bunch of links via message if you like. TY for looking!(Maybe Whale Oil Lamp is secret code for Hookah? Hahaha!!)

According to what I read it kinda makes sense really and probably(just guessing ) because they are of the same vintage (Whale oil lamps were used just prior to the invention of electricity, and used maybe for hundreds of years before, and Opium has certainly been around for ages, but I think the Opium Wars took place around the early 1800's and again in the late 1800's - read Wiki- The First Opium War , was fought by the British in 1817 (much of it was at sea by boat -thus probably overlapping the Whaling industry, it certainly was mixed up with Tea trading, with the Chinese who were probably the largest producers of Opium, but also India was involved because of the Tea trade) , At this time all trade between continents had to be by ship , so it's easy to see how Whalers got involved , in the Opium Wars ,maybe not intentionally ,but following the whales , I would also imagine the money involved transporting Opium, , for a whaling vessel must have been nearly irresistable with so much money involved!!

Ok , Lol! I did a sort of generic look using the farthest location , Calif (and since I haven't boxed it yet or packed it , it really is a bit of a guess .I based it on 7Lbs/ a guess, and approx . box size 24" x 8" 8" came to $17,75 I think it was Parcel Post , plus $1 for tracking $1 for insurance, but let me see what it might be to yours (it may vary depending on the box and if you want 2 nd day priority or more options). Yes, it looks like $15.07 to you (based on the size and weight I estimated ) add $1 for tracking $1 for $50 insurance ($1 might cover up to $100 , but I don't see that option online). Thanks .
