These are actually Ferrocerium rods. They have no magnesium in them and no fint either. It's a man made alloy that sparks even better then flint stone. They are often incorrectly called magnesium rods by retailers because of the old magnesium fire starters that are issue to military personnel. Those have a Ferrocerium rod along a bar of magnesium alloy, where you can shave magnesium of the bar then use the rod light the magnesium. Only these Ferrocerium rods have no magnesium at all.

Great little kit though. A fire starter and a signaling device are the two of the most important things you can have in a survival situation
