Description

The listing, antique silver chalice tarnished has ended.

My mom gave this to me about 15 years ago. I know nothing about it. It has a makers stamp on it. Its kinda heavy and tarnished bad. I thought about cleaning it, but changed my mind. I know its best to leave old stuff alone so it doesnt mess with the value. I will be taking this to a place to have it tested to see if it is 100% silver or plated. I will update the info when I know. Thank you.

I am sorry for the delay in questions concerning shipping. I will say itshould be less than 8.00 for shipping. Any more it comes from me anyless I will let you know. I did find out that this is not silver nor brass per the acid test at a local pawn shop. Now I am no expert on metals so I stated this was silver because it looks silver. However after my findings I do want everyone to know that if you bid and win and did not see this post, I will refund your credits as soon as listia will allow it. I am not about trying to cheat someone or being dishonest. Its not how I was raised. So please try to ask questions if you have any and I will inform the winner before I ship this out. For those who choose to bid I wish you luck. Many blessings to all. And my apologies for my lack of knowledge.

Old stuff, antiques, estate items, SILVER and JEWELRY should be cleaned, or by a jeweler or professional. Never leave tarnish sitting on metal, it is eating away at the precious metal and turning it into yuck.

The marks indicate it was made for use by the occupational forces of the British. The made in India tells us it was also made for export. But why do you believe it is silver. India used mainly brass, and they still do. If this was plated, as some peeling can be seen on the bottom, little remains. You can even see fingerprints etched into the metal. This is why metal should by washed and wiped dry then stored without further touching. The oils and acids of our skin will eat away at the metal, coins, jewelry. Just the air can break down the metal, tarnish is what we see. So after a good cleaning a large zip lock and one of those silica dry air packets, from medicine, aspirin, vitamin bottles. Your jeweler can sell you some anti tarnish tabs. If you have someone test this with acid on the bottom and the stem, inside the cup, ask them to wash it off after before you leave. If they want to check for plate they will take a metal file and cut in to expose what is below the surface. If it is silver all the way through, you will have around $10 an ounce as scrap. It will no longer look as it did and I doubt it would sell afterward. If it is brass, undecorated, it would clean up nice, and could be used. I am not trying to trash your auction, I can not see the item in front of me and can not offer any facts on the item, just offer a little advice to you on the options you may run into. I would not recommend drinking wine from this. Good luck

Thank you for your help. I dont think you are trashing my auction as I always welcome anyone who can provide information that I do not know. As of yet I have found no one will to test this unless I take it to a pawn shop where they can do the liquid scratch test. And sometimes they are wrong. So at this point I dont know what to say other than it looks silver and I sell as is. I also would encourage the buyer to clean and check it good before considering drinking from it. I never used it it just sat on my hutch for decoration all these years. I just find myself decluttering my home the older I get and I hope that the things I do post will a good home for someone who can use them I some way. I will still try to find out if it is silver or brass before auction end.
