Another tip: Gold does not tarnish, unless it has impurities. This coin if real has impurities as it states without alloy, meaning when they melted the raw ore down they did not add any other metal to it, just what was already mixed by mother nature. Gold will tarnish in one way, if enclosed in an air tight container with papers like stocks, bonds, certificates, labels (INK), the acids of the paper and the inks will effect the gold.

Sure fire method to test for precious metals of any REAL kind: Sprinkle or dust your forearm with pressed makeup powder. Rub side of coin along arm, if a dark mark appears it is genuine, silver or gold; darker the line it makes the higher the purity. NO KIDDING. Baby powder might work.

I am surprised that no one has said the obvious... since 1795, on all half eagles the eagles wing tips are pointed up

Actually it is not a joke it was on two different sites. It is apparently a fact that real gold has very little taste to it. The question is do you have a better or quicker way on hand? Did have one thought on that though, since so much of our taste depends on smell, it is possible that real gold might smell different as well. The old prospectors test of biting it to see if it dents might also work. I am not trying to pull your leg, I just don't work that way. Think about what do I have to gain by giving you ideas on possible ways you can test that coin?

With all that said. I respect them words of knowlege. Thanks.

Looked into the coin a little One thing I read said a simple way to test a coin was to lick it apparently pure gold has little or no taste.

Could you add a picture of the edge of the coin. It looks from this picture that there is a seam on the coin. Is there one?

Hi, You know it has that seam. What has that to do with it? Or better yet,how did you know? Keith

i agree with Keith, saw one on EBay that sold for $10, an unmarked replica...but still a cool type coin.

So the real thing here is that its not real & not gold in any way right?

Here is a link to some information http://numismatics.org/collection/1980.109.2363
Not an Officially minted US coin but minted by a private company. Couples ways to check this out would be to weigh it. The real version are commonly duplicated and it wasn't until recently that the word COPY or REPLICA had to be add to coins that were sold that resemble other coins. I am still looking for more info. Good Luck with your auction
