I had the same thing with my Canon. When we went online to see how to fix it, one of the things it said to do was make sure there was no sand or anything around the lens that extends. Then it said to hold the button down that you use to snap the picture and the on button at the same time for about 5 seconds. You could also go into the menu to reset but we could get ours to do that. There was a website that had about 7 ways to fix this particular problem. Unfortunately, mine got fried so that was the end of that. Maybe this will help.
