If you are an experienced plant propagator you are going to be pleased with how easy it is to germinate the Chinese tallow (Sapium sebiferum or Triadica sebifera). The white seed requires no stratification or removal of the waxy covering. The wax, by the way, was historically used to make soap and candles. The Chinese tallow matures quickly and produces 100,000 seeds each year. Since it remains productive for about 100 years, it has become a pest in Florida. Grow Chinese tallow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 11. Seeds ripen in October and November.

1 Fill the germination container with equal parts of sterile seed starting mix and sand. Slowly run water over the mixture until it is evenly moist. You may have to stir the mixture as you add water to ensure that it’s wet.

Lay the Chinese tallow seed on the surface of the mix and cover it with 1 inch of sand. Use water from a spray bottle to moisten the sand.

Place the container in an area that receives bright sunlight and keep the soil moist at all times. The Chinese tallow seeds should germinate in four weeks.

Continue to keep the soil moist as the seedling grows. Plant it in spring, in an area that receives full sun all day.
