I love this!! Your advice to Meg is great. My youngest grandson (11yrs) loves to cook. My advice to him has been to learn what flavors go together - not by what others say but by your own taste. Use recipes as a gentle guide, not set in stone - fix them to your liking. And, always pay attention when cooking especially with your nose because if it smells bad it probably (but not definitely) tastes bad, and if it smells done it probably is.

Thank you so much my friend! I never toss away food if I can save it somehow..lol. I'm a great one to dice fruit and mix it into whatever I've messed up..Generations ago our relatives did the same thing & they didn't have the funds or variety that we do today..Love, love one pot meals where you toss everything into it..and simmer for hours.

Your Grandson will be a great cook! That's the most marvelous advice I've heard & TRUE!! Your awesome therealpeggysue!

Blessings & so much Joy to you & yours~~~~~~

I believe that the ability to cook is a gift. Both my best friend and my young nephew are completely self-taught and can whip up the most amazing dishes while I burn water and struggle just to make eggs and toast!

Hi Nancy..It's been a while!!
I am a horrible cook. I sure didn't learn anything from my mom!! To her making spaghetti was opening up a can of Chef Boy R D. The stuff is so gross I can't even stand the smell. When I got married 40 years ago cooking was a real problem.
Of course we had zip for funds!!
7 days a week we had Hamburger or Tuna Helper!! And a roll of those little tube rolls. I can't eat Tuna Fish to this day!!
I have learned to cook on my own. A pan of lasagna is great bought at the store. Let it thaw a little, spray a dish and bake. lol Even my brothers fall for that one and I don't have to try to clean that nasty pan!!.
My husband thinks a baked potato has to be done in an oven. I figured that one out. Bake that potato in the microwave. Wrap it in foil and put it the oven. Same with chicken. We have a store that has the best baked chicken we have ever had.
I buy 2 chickens for 6 dollars each. Take them out of the wrapping. Put the chickens and the drippings in a pan. Stick it in the oven. I call it 'beer can chicken'.
I save electricity and it takes such a little bit of time. I have all sorts of things I do.
My friends laugh so hard and want me to write a cookbook!!
I think I have to have yours. Esp if it is simple and gives me more ideas.

Lora, Oh My Gosh you have me doubled over with laughter..YOU need to write this down and Do write a cookbook! Snickering loudly because I adore your shortcuts to cooking..Heh heh..And who needs to know your terrific secrets certainly not the family..lol...

I love to cook & learned from my Grandmother & Mom at a young age. (BUT have made some super dilly of mistakes along the way too..ROFL!)

I love simple recipes but when I'm in the kitchen that goes out and I'm deep into a major work..why? I don't know but the muse strikes me like crazy and I have to do it!

To this day I still can't recreate the wonderful super special dishes my Grandmother made. A pinch here & secret ingredients..it was all in their minds & not written down. I've come close but not close enough..lol!

When I was married (back in the cavemen days) I used to make macaroni with fried onions and when everything was done add cold cottage cheese to it..UGH..Cheap & it did taste good but like you mentioned so tired of it after awhile..lol The things we do to stretch that food budget!

Oh sweetie, thank you for the happiness, joy & Sunshine you just gave me!! I love your comments with a passion!

Blessings, massive Blessings & Joy to you sweetie!
