You do not need a computer for this scale to work it has a 9.volt battery the usb is for integration with print-n-ship or other similar programs.

If the program you are integrating this scale with is windows 8.1 compatible then this scale will work with it.If you are just using it as a stand alone scale it only requires power from your usb or simply use a 9.volt battery

Great that's what I have right now, I print my shipping labels from home with a scale from Stamps.com, and that how it weighs through a USB port on my computer then to my printer! Thanks Very interested F&W
