Planting will depend on your location. Plant your pansies as soon as temperature conditions allow for healthy growth. Pansies are planted from seed as early as July in cooler climes and as late as September in the south. The plants will require up to 10 or 12 weeks to establish a root system and reach blooming size. Alternatively, you can grow pansies indoors if the temperature outside is too hot. In this case, the pansies can be transplanted outdoors at about six weeks or so.
Planting Tips
Select a location that gets full sun to part shade. Insufficient direct sunlight can result in spindly plants and limited flower production. Commonly, pansies are planted with five to 10 inches of space to allow for growth and air flow. Note that you should never plant Pansies in the same location more than two years in a row as fungal build-up in the soil becomes a problem.
Pansies flourish in rich, light, quick-draining soil. Place the seeds under a one-eighth inch layer of moist soil and lightly press down lightly. Cover the seedbed with moist burlap or plastic film to help retain moisture until the seeds begin sprouting after six to eight days. Shade the sprouts until they have developed leaves. Water regularly, but lightly.
