Description

The listing, **Estate Find** Vintage Soapstone Carving Possibly Wild Boar MUST SEE has ended.

You're looking at the most profound carving I've seen. I'm not sure if I like this, or dislike, but I find it extremely interesting. This was an estate sale find. The only bit of Information I have is that "the man had it for a very long time". I bought this knowing I would want to do some research.
The only marking is a crudely scratched in "Made China". That's it.
I took quite a few pictures, knowing some look quite similar but I wanted you to see the emphasis the carver brought to the spine and the ribs, and no teeth.
It's definitely soap stone as it is cool to the touch and the texture looks exactly like other soapstone carvings.
I have spent some time trying to find some similar animal in China and the only thing I got close to was this wild dog called a Dhole, a Chinese Wild Pig and a wild boar.
One other interesting fact-no teeth. From other people's interpretation, they all felt it was a wild boar, or a species from someone's imagination, or something going back to mythology.
I was never able to find anything exact, but saw individual similarities to the wild boar and wild pig. I'd be interested if you have any ideas of your own.

The measurements: tallest point is a bit taller than 6-1/4".
Turning it upside down, from side to side it is 3-1/2".
This was carved from one solid piece. It has some heavy weight to it.

Questions are welcome and I will to my best to give you an answer. If anything, it's definitely a conversation starter. This will be shipped free to your Listia verified address.

I thank you for checking out this auction. Have fun and good luck!

I think I owe it to everyone that has written me, here and private message to leave it as an auction. I appreciate your efforts, I really do and if I hadn't gotten a few very nice emails that I did, I would offer a gin, but there's just too much interest from some really nice people. Thanks and good luck.

Lol how about it being a Chupacabra? Looks like the pics in our local paper of what was running around the county a couple of years ago, it ended up being a coyote with mange. But either way, that was a very ugly creature. The Hispanic community around here would definitely call your statue a Chupacabra!

Like I said, I'm not sure if I like it, or not. Sometimes it feels eerie to look at. Scary, almost. I'm going to look up Tasmanian Tiger. Thanks for the suggestion.

Very good summary. He still scares me. I did look up "Tasmanian Tiger" and derekwaite754 might have a good eye. There is a huge similarity. Where I thought focus was brought by the artist to the "ribs" the Taz Tiger has a pouch there. It's all very interesting. Honestly, I wish I knew the artist.

Yes, i also find it very very interesting! I don't know if I like it or not either! Lol but would love to show to my dad, as he knows almost EVERYTHING about most things as a very well know antique collector and appraiser. He has taught me about soapstone and I've owned many many soapstone prices. Man, I've NEVER seen a piece like this one. Not sure what he could be. Pigs, even undernourished one you can't usually make out ribs. Boars mostly have tusks, and I find it super strange to have it sitting in such a position over some kind of bucket, bowl? Have you approached any antique collectors or local sat/history museums? I'm super interested to see what you can find out about it. I'll be watching. Perhaps? Mythical, like you said........F&W, maybe even bidding. Ty for offering.

Hmm can't stop looking at it. I thought it was sitting on its rear haunches, but I'm wrong. It almost looks fetus like. Or if the back is more hyena like, as sometimes their ribs do show... The no teeth thing has me thinking, the fetus of some kind, I can't get a look to see of eyes are carved open or in formation stage. Cow? But then the paws are wrong. They're not hooves. Jackel? I'm stumped! Anyone have any ideas?

I have to leave in a minute, but look up that Tasmanian Tiger. You'll see what I mean about the ribs not being ribs but a sack-like pouch...let me know what you think. Also the face looks similar. Definitely no teeth, which would have been easy to carve in. The eyes appear as big circles, but then blackened with something. The rib like thing could definitely be a pouch as they go all the way around over the belly area. I'll check when I get back if you've had a chance to look at that Taz Tiger. Thanks!
Hey any chance your dad could look at it on the computer? I'm as curious as you are. I haven't had anybody professional look at.

For a while I had a membership with an appraisal service through "JustAnswer.com". Alan was who I worked with and he is great. I'm surprised at myself that I never sent him photos of this guy. I can't rejoin right now. It was a great price ($40.00 monthly for 5 appraisals) but I need to hold off for now. But, it's great if anyone reads this. Just request Alan.

He won't get a computer! He makes my sister do that! Lol. He also lives out of state so I can't even show him the picture I'm seeing.
