Solid sterling is .999 sterling and as such would be much to soft to use molded into a ring setting. So a small binder of copper is added for durability causing the sterling to go from pure .999 to mixed .925.The mix of copper is so small .925 is what is commonly known as sterling silver and will be mar .925.
