Human beings walking on the moon - the concept had fascinated man for centuries. But in the late 1950's and early 60's reality began to catch-up with imagination. There were events taking place that would lead to one of the most ambitious space program ever conducted -

APOLLO

Project Apollo achieved the goals set by President Kennedy. Twice before the end of the decade man explored the moon. Those two landings and the four that followed in the early 70's gave Lunar scientists around the world a variety of sample material, photographs and electronic data. Some of the findings included 1. A lunar history time scale, 2. General agreement that "sea" regions are lava flow, that most of the craters are projectile impacts, 3. Support of conclusions that the moon has been inactive for the last 2 to 3 billion years, 4. A stronger than expected and variable magnetic fields and a hotter than expected interior, 5. Distinct differentiation between the chemical composition of the moon and that of the earth.

The overall cost of the Apollo Program was $25 billion which included rockets, engines, spacecraft's, tracking and data acquisition, operation, support and facilities.
