The listing, ANTIQUE World War 1 (WW1) Copper French Trench Art Unique Letter Opener for the Collector has ended.
This letter opener is one for the collector. Trench art refers to decorative items made by soldiers or prisoners of war. There are usually "signature" markings. Most are symbols, figures, or motifs as their signature. This particular piece has intricate decorative engraving similar to a zipper following the shape of the opener. In the center, engraved is "1914 SNIR DE LA GUERRE 1917" (French). Before and after that inscription are delicate flowers. On the handle are five figures resembling the capitol letter I or roman numeral 1. There is a small gash towards the tip.
It measures approx. 9" from tip to end of handle. It's solid as it does have some weight to it.
Many years ago someone took the time to leave their mark in history. This is certainly a piece of history. I purchased this at auction. The only part of inscription I was able to research on google was "de la guerre". In French, that means " of the war". Now SNIR could be a NAME or a misspelling of the Spanish "senor" meaning "man" or " mister", so it could have meant "man of the war". I would love to know its story, but I have no other information. Someone who's reading this will probably be able to figure out more than I did. Would love to know if you do!
If you're a World War collector or metal ware collector this is a unique addition to add to the historical things you have. If you're stumped for a gift, and that person is a collector of such, what a thoughtful gift this would be.
