1943 Steel Wartime Cents – 2 Sets – One In A Case. LOOK!
You are bidding on two sets of 1943 Steel Cents. One is in a case with a picture of a WWII airplane on it, showing both front and back of the pennies, one from each mint, which are in A/U condition. Truly a beautiful set! 3 loose Zinc coated Steel Pennies, one from each mint, – they are truly, truly stunning! But these three coins are truly stunning! Two great sets of coins!
Due to wartime needs of Copper for use in ammunition and other military equipment during World War II, the US Mint researched various ways, it was decided the one-cent coin was to be minted in zinc-coated steel. This alloy caused the new coins to be magnetic and 13% lighter. They were struck at all three mints: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. As with the bronze cents, coins from the latter two sites have respectively "D" and "S" mint marks below the date.
Although they continued to circulate into the 1960s, the mint collected large numbers of the 1943 cents and destroyed them.
