The listing, Genuine Fossil Shark Tooth, 50 Million Years Old w/ Info Card! has ended.
This is a genuine fossil shark tooth, 50 million years old! The dime is for size reference.
The common name for the shark was Mackerel Shark, scientific name Otodus obliqua.
Found in the phosphate mines of northwest Africa, this area was once covered by ocean water. This extinct shark grew to be over 15 feet long and 2000 pounds, larger than today's great whites. The small teeth-like protrusions on the side near the root of the tooth are called cusplets.
In their lifetime, sharks lose thousands of teeth and new ones grow back to replace the ones lost. When the teeth fall to the bottom of the ocean, they absorb minerals from their surroundings and turn brown, grey or black. Shark teeth are the world's most common vertebrate fossil and a precious gem from nature's past.
