Description

The listing, TROPICAL, GORGEOUS & TASTY! 6 TAMARIND TREE SEEDS **CHECK THIS OUT** has ended.

Tamarindus indica L.

Leguminosae (Fabaceae)

Common Names: Tamarind, Tamarindo, Tamarin, Sampalok.

This is an auction for 6 Tamarind Seeds (Tamarindus indicus). These seeds were collected this year from my Tamarind Tree, which is about 25' tall and is about 6 years old.

Description: Tamarind is a slow-growing, massive tree that can reach a height of 80 or even 100 ft, can have a spread up to 40 ft, and can have a large trunk; up to 25 ft around. Many trees live for 100's of years, growing into magestic giants (The second to last photo is of a 500 year old Tamarind in India)

Origin: Africa, but now throughout the tropics & semi-tropical world.

Light: Full sun.

Moisture: Regular watering. It is fairly tolerant of drought, but tends to drop its leaves during even normal dry seasons.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 8-11.

Propagation: Generally propagated by seed.

*Does not do well in a pot for long.
*However, can be trained into a bonsai

Usage: Tamarinds are grown as ornamental shade and street trees, and for the edible pods. Tasty and beautiful! The pulp within the pods is used to make beverages, curries, chutneys and sauces (we use our tamarind pulp to make beverages, sauces & marinades; makes chicken taste delicious!!).
*Tamarind pulp is made into a soft drink known as “refresco de tamarindo” in Latin America, and “tamarinade” in Jamaica.
Tamarind is used extensively in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine, and is an important ingredient in Worcestershire sauce.

Use as a medicinal plant: Several medicinal uses of tamarind are reported in “Grieve's: A Modern Herbal”: The fruit is said to improve digestion, relieve gas, soothe sore throats, and act as a mild laxative.
