Remember, too, these "tough old birds" that someone posted earlier ADORE Linux: Ubuntu in particular. Then you don't have to mess around with drivers, etc. I've spruced up old laptops that you'd swear just came off the store shelf and run like the wind on Ubuntu....or any other version of Linux. AND, Linux is FREE, along with its software that, personally, I think beats most of 'Windoze' inflated applications...many of them unnecessary. You can download or order the latest Ubuntu version off the web or just buy a copy from someone on eBay.

One more thing (sorry, I can't help myself: I love this stuff), someone mentioned having to install Open Office (free) to replace MS Office. Here's my deal these days with installing software: you don't have to. Cloud computing is also free and as long as you've got a web browser, you don't need to bog down a hard drive and use a ton of memory (ram). From Google Apps to tons of entire 'cloud desktops,' it's not only SO great to be able to do what you need to do from any computer and get to your files, but they are secure (I still back up to a huge gigabyte usb drive, tho)....which you should always do no matter how you're computing.

Nope. Here's what you do with those crazy computers:

1. Clean them up wherever you feel you safely can with q-tips, alcohol, scratch-repair, small vacuum (keep track of the screws!!!) You can't IMAGINE what dust does to components; it often 'eats' them.

2. Get and keep and few versions of Linux on hand because, depending on the guts (errr, hardware :-), some flavors of Linux don't play nice with REALLY REALLY old systems. Our buddy up in the posts can help with that (and his site and comments BETTER NOT be removed as he's not selling anything; he's giving away his time and expertise).

3. Take great pics of those 'crazy laptops' running. They'll blow people away. If the cases are really scratched, go on eBay and order a nice generic 'skin' that adheres but can be removed without leaving residue. They run around $5.

You won't believe how many credits you'll get and, you should, I think, SPLIT the shipping cost. I just believe that not just one party should shoulder the entire CASH layout for shipping a FREE ITEM. Good grief, people need to get a grip on that issue.

Boy, I wish I were in your shoes! I'd love to have friends who just give me their crazy computers! Woo Hoo, I'd be raking in the credits!!!! I'm jealous....makes me want to go dumpster-diving for some. LOL

lol, here its not realy diving people just lay em on the curb for some reason. good idea thankx! yeah the shipping does seem to get a bit crazy on here, i like just free shipping saves me the time of the whole pay pal thing, or waiting on hidden cash. oh u should check craigslist in ur area, people here give away computers that dont have os or just old. thankx so much for the tips! hopefuly the next one i post will look awesome!!

I have an originial Dell Xp Re-install CD for the laptop that will also install all of the drivers that it needs. If I do not win this I would be willing to do a GIN auction for the winner to get it from me. I also have a 160GB hard drive that will fit this laptop that I would be willing to part with for points if the winner of this would like to upgrade this puter. message me if you have questions.

With dell you have to install the drivers in the proper order or it won't work right. You can download them all from the dell website. I am typing this from the same exact laptop as in the auction.

So theres no power cord for it?
Sep 24th, 2011 at 9:05:00 AM PDT by
Original
No i got this without one, but i will part with one of mine if bids get to 5000 or more. cords are not very expensive u can get one for less than 10 bucks on e bay, but i figured since i am paying shipping i would leave the cord responibility up to the bidder, but if bids do not get over 5000 i will make sure to send it out fully charged!

Can I take my desktop disks for Windows XP and download and also get on the internet. I am disabled and in wheelchair and it would be a dream if this would work for me and I could win. Power cord can be gotten at any PC shop or online for those that are complaining.

honestly i have no clue if that will work. i know that right now it wont get on the internet because it has the wrong windows on it, so it doesnt have the drivers to pick up the wireless internet card in it, so i dont know, maybe someone else that reads this could help us out lol. thanks for looking!

You can Use an OEM Windows XP CD to install the OS or Call Dell and possibly talk them into sending a Restore CD even out of warranty if you know how to talk to them. I am an IT Specialist so if you need things let me know.

cool thankx i will check into that cd, as far as dell i must not know how to talk to them, i can never get them to do what i need lol.
