History of Cup Plates
Glass cup plates were used during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, when teacups without handles were in fashion. Hot tea was poured from the cup into the deep saucer to cool; and the cup would then be placed on a cup plate to prevent stains on the linen tablecloth or the table surface.
