For 75 years, Batman has protected Gotham City from the forces of evil. Since his debut, he has become one of the most iconic super heroes in history. These stamps chronicle the evolution of the character, from his origins to present day.

Four versions of the Caped Crusader are depicted from the four eras of comic book history: the Modern Age (top row), the Bronze Age (second row), the Silver Age (third row), and the Golden Age (bottom row). In addition, there are four incarnations of the famed Bat-Signal.

The idea for Batman emerged in the lat 1930s. Superman has made his first appearance in Action Comics #1 in 1938, and its publisher, DC Comics, was looking for a hit for its Detective Comics line.

In 1939, DC Comics editor Vincent Sullivan decided that he wanted another costumed hero to build on the popularity of the Man of Steel. So he asked artist Bob Kane whether he would be willing to develop a character in the genre of Superman. Kane enthusiastically agreed.

Kane showed his initial Batman sketches to Sullivan, who gave the go-ahead for a six-page story. Kane had writer Bill Finger script the first Batman adventure, which appeared in the May 1939 issue of Detective Comics #27. The character was so successful that one year later the first comic book devoted exclusively to the Caped Crusader's adventures, Batman #1, hit newsstand a.

Since then, Batman's popularity has reached incredible heights. Today, Batman lives on, fighting for justice in the pages of the comics, on the silver screen, and in the imaginations of fans across the world.
