What are Washi Tapes?
Sep 30th, 2015 at 12:36:43 PM PDT by
Original
They're like a masking tape. They're thin and a little see through and can be stuck on things, taken off, and stuck again (depending on the product you stick it on). Everything I've read says they're made out of Japanese rice paper. People use it for scrapbooking, decorating assorted things, decorating letters, etc. I hope that's answered your question. :)

Your very welcome i have been a washi tape collector for about almost 1yr and a half i will link you to the true information on the washi and the different types of tapes :) Also i do see a lot of people auctioning off the dollar tree or 99cents brands and those are not washi they are similar to washi they are a thick paper tape and they do not stick as well as real washi hope that helps as well. If you scroll down a bit it will tell you insections the washi difference Here is the link-------> https://www.cutetape.com/creative/blog/2012/6/what-is-washi-tape

Just wanted to let you know the glitter tapes are not washi. Those do not tear easily like the washi you would need to cut with scissors, you are correct the washi is a thin like paper so it is greatly used for scrap booking & planner because others like to rip the tape easily :) good luck on your auction

Thank you for letting me know. It seems like there's a lot of misinformation about washi out there. The glitter tapes were labeled as washi and not glitter tape. So basically anything that's not print/solid masking tape (to feel) isn't washi tape??

MT brand which is sold and made in Japan (but you can find online too) is made from Bamboo. I will have check my list of the other brands. I have most written down for future reference. I have been collecting kawaii for over 15 years. I learned about it when i was younger on an old mIRC group I was apart of. Loooonnngggg time ago LOL. i have a lot more vintage kawaii things than I do newer. Ive been slowly clearing out on ebay of the stuff Im getting rid of.

I've seen the MT brand being sold online. I didn't know it was sold and made in Japan - I just saw the price lol. But that actually makes sense now. I can't imagine how much kawaii stuff I'll have in 15 years lol at this rate. I think I first got stuff around May or so? I don't have a TON, but I keep adding to it. It's so, so easy to get addicted to this stuff!! And washi tape....how I love thee. lol :) Thanks again for answering my questions and letting me know and everything. :)

And some tapes from other countries (like China, etc) are made with a combo of paper and rice paper...but actual washi is made from Bamboo!!
Oct 1st, 2015 at 8:06:47 PM PDT by

Do they have actual washi here or is predominantly the rice paper? That would be good to know too for future reference. I should have read more instead of the few sites I found. Thank you again for telling me... I really appreciate it. :)

I lived in Japan for 8 months and have visited off and on, I actually watched them make Washi tape in a factory there. It's made with extremely thin sheets of bamboo. SOME tapes made in the US are made with Rice paper as Bamboo isn't easily found here

That is so cool!! I'm jealous you got to go there. Is that where you found out about kawaii or did you already? I found out on Listia lol. That's really good to know about the bamboo so I can be better informed. And how neat you saw it made!!

Washi tape is actually made out of Bamboo :)

Really?? I read on the internet it's rice paper (so it must be true lol). Thank you for letting me know....you learn something new everyday like they say! :)
