Steel Pennies - 50 In A Penny Coin Tube

Up for bids is this coin tube of 50 Steel Pennies. No Guarantee's on the mint marks, I only know for certain that some don't have one. They look to be in great condition, average circulated condition, but exceptional. Please see all pics and make your own determination of condition.

Due to wartime needs of copper for use in ammunition and other military equipment during World War II, the United States Mintresearched various ways to limit dependence and meet conservation goals on copper usage. After trying out several substitutes (ranging from other metals to plastics.) to replace the then-standard bronze alloy, the one-cent coin was minted in zinc-coatedsteel. This alloy caused the new coins to be magnetic and 13% lighter. They were struck at all three mints: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. As with the bronze cents, coins from the latter two sites have respectively "D" and "S" mint marks below the date.

Oh. Ok. Ty. Then I have some slabbed coins and didnt know that term. In 1960 when I started school my grandfather gave us a silver dollar and told us to never spend it. I saved all mine. My brother and sister spent theirs on candy. My grandfather willed his silver coins, and some old bills to me, I have a old coffee can filled with silver coins, going to pass them on to my son, he too is a saver, we just like looking at them. A friend of my husband said they were worth in the thousands. He also said the paper silver certificates werent worth as much, some were folded. Got some $5 dollar bills with red ink, said they were worth more. Those steel pennies were collected by my grandmother and put in a date book. Got those Indian head pennies too. Collecting coins is fun. My favor of the coins is the old silver dollars, especially my favorite one 1800 something, my first coin my grandfather gave me, you cant put a price on memories.

Some Silver Dollars are worth a lot of money. I know any Silver with a "CC" mint mark are very, very valuable. If you have any with that mint mark - hold onto them.

My granddad gave me some steel pennies. What is a slab penny?

Definition: Slabbing is a slang term for the process of encapsulating a coin in a permanent plastic holder, as practiced by coin grading services. And no this coin is not graded.

Ok, that sparks an interest now. Looks like I will be doing some research. When my kids and grandchildren are all together Christmas this will be a good conversation piece, and more interesting to them if I have any high quality ones. I'm going to look up cc. I hope I have one or more of them. Thanks for the information, I'm excited now!

1943 - All steel cents were minted in 1943 for the war effort - the military needed Copper for various things. There were a few minted in 1944 - but those are worth thousands! Thanks for checking out my auction.
