Can this be used as a Bluetooth speaker alone or does it have to be hooked up to one to work?

It's not a speaker by itself, no. You plug it into something, such as your non Bluetooth speakers, for example. Then, using a Bluetooth enabled device, such as your smart phone, you access this device thus making your non Bluetooth speakers accessible from your phone. I hope that helps

Does it have a mic

No. It's not an audio device itself. No mic, no speakers. It picks up a Bluetooth signal and allows you to transmit that signal to equipment that are not Bluetooth enabled. We have a very nice set of speakers that we didn't want to replace in order to use Bluetooth. This little device plugged right in and now we can play our music through them without having to plug our phone, laptop or tablet directly into the speakers. I can transmit my playlist to the speakers and still be using my laptop in another part of the house.
