Would this work on an apple phone? I have an 5c

Not as-is. You would need an adapter to use it with ANY Apple product. This has a mini USB connector, and I believe the iPhone 5 has the fire connector (or whatever it's called). And if you did that, the phone would be sitting on the adaptor, not the dock. This would make it unstable and likely to tip over, giving you a bad connection.

It gets power from the USB connection, but it doesn't have to be your computer. You can plug it into any USB 5v power source. That's how I use it. You can't sync that way, but it charges just fine.
