The Minoans settled the island of Crete and other nearby islands, including Santorini, whose ancient name was Thera. Many believe that the Minoan's destruction at the height of their civilization after a cataclysmic volcanic eruption on Thera, gave rise to the legends of Atlantis. My name, Teresa, is derived from Thera, the island's name.

The Snake Goddess, an earth goddess and a symbol of fertility, is a bare breasted woman holding a snake in each hand. The first figurine was found during excavation of Minoan archaeological sites in Crete dating from approximately 1600 BCE. These figurines were found only in house sanctuaries as a protector of the household, where the snake appears as "the snake of the household". The serpent is often symbolically associated with the renewal of life because it sheds its skin periodically. In some cultures the snake is the symbol of the umbilical cord of Mother Nature to the Earth.
