The listing, Civil War Era Keys has ended.
Two Civil War era keys found at camp site of Union army during raid on Lexington Virginia. The keys are illustrated in photo here. Long one is about 2 1/2 inches long and shorter one is 2 inches long. Both have holes in the teeth end and probably used to lock a chest or strong box? The keys are blackened indicating they perhaps went through a fire in the woods? If they could only talk!
The Union Army under Gen. Hunter in 1864 led a force to capture Lynchburg and left a path of death and destruction including the destruction of VMI and looting of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) as they passed through this area before being stopped and routed by a smaller Confederate force outside of Lynchburg. This Confederate force chased Hunter's forces back to West Virginia.
Oh cool! I have always wanted one. We live very close to a civil war cemetery. I am sure that the road to it and the pastures surrounding it are wonderful places to take a metal detector. Have a friend who owns a farm that joins the cemetery. I just don't have the metal detector.
Local old timers tell me the keys probably belonged to some local's lockbox as the Union troops on Hunter's raid looted and robbed the people of Lexington in addition to looting Washington College and VMI. VMI was put to the torch and only the intervention of a Union officer stopped the soldiers from burning Washington College.
Wow this is so fascinating to me!! You r so right if them 2 keys could only talk..... Most definitely watching, would luv to give these 2 pieces of history to my hubby for Christmas!! Fanned ya aswell. Very awesome auction!
