Interesting, I could not get my older apple remote to communicate with it but that might be because my older Apple TV is still functioning and sitting directly below the new one. It would make sense for Apple to allow the previous generation remotes to provide basic navigation as 4th Gen replacement remotes are about $80 and 2 week lead time - but I'm just thinking out loud here. Either way you'd want to be sure and kept the newer remote around as it's critical to navigating all the menus and options based on the 'touch surface.'

Ah that's a very good idea! You'll be amazed at how long the battery lasts! I'm going on a month and haven't had to charge it!

I can confirm that the previous Apple Remotes are not compatible with the newer 4th Generation. The new remote communicates with the unit via Bluetooth whereas the previous models used traditional IR technology. This allows you to keep you Apple TV completely out of sight, or point the remote in a different direction and it will still function. The newer remote also has IR however it's used only to control the volume of your TV - It automatically programs itself to your particular TV and you don't even know it did it. I was impressed. It's a 'glass' touch surface according to apple but I would never have guessed it was glass based on using it. It is slightly more delicate than the previous remotes but they've come out with some pretty cool cases and 'loop' type devices to help protect it. Hope this helps and good luck!
