Description

The listing, *MUST SEE* AU 1877- S LIBERTY SEATED HALF DOLLAR has ended.

THIS ONE IS THE NEXT "MUST SEE" IN THE LATEST OFFERINGS OF THE "VERY COLLECTABLE" AND "VERY EXPENSIVE" COIN AUCTIONS.
This auction is for a 1877-S Silver Liberty Seated Half Dollar.
As you can see on the scans above, all wear is limited to just beginning on Liberty's Breast and only 1 Knee, with the wear on the reverse has just barely started on the Eagle's Head, Tops of Wings and the Claws.
There are Full Facial Features and even Hair Lines on the Head of Liberty. This coin was pulled from circulation just in time to warrant the AU grade, but you study it and see what you think, for I gave you both scans and pictures to show you every detail that this coin still has.

The scans above are of the actual item that you will receive, and are provided for you to determine the condition and/or grade of it.
I never clean or alter coins in any way, and do my best to allow you to see every detail and/or every blemish that the coins I list have, so that you can make an informed and confident bid.
I am no longer accepting GIN offers for my auctions, everyone now gets a shot at bidding.
I have changed my normal days to hold auctions, so now be sure to check out my auctions that run on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
The winner will receive this via FREE SHIPPING W/Tracking.
Remember that all Listia rules apply.

Now that the holidays are over with, the Post Office has been doing a better job of getting packages to their destination in a timely manner, but not all of them. Some are still taking up to a week (or more) for no special or evident reason.
Just let it be known that all items will be sent the next available day after end of auction, for I actually go to the Post Office and pay the Postage and Tracking in person so that you will receive your item as soon as possible. I also check all Tracking numbers daily and will keep you informed of anything that is out of the ordinary.
Thank you for your interest in my auctions and stopping by to view them.

I am very interested.
I must ask, are there any marks on the edges that are not visible for a camera? It is something that can be missed, so I have been told it is good to ask.

well, I know that the scans would not be at an angle that the edges could be seen. the pictures are at a bit of an angle but not enough for you to see that the edges are reeded. I am not completely sure about what you are asking unless this answers your question:
the edges are reeded and there are no rim dings. I can try to get a picture of the edges if you want.

Thanks, I think than answers my question. I just know that much of the wording in the laws about defacing coin are due to the fact that people would sand down the edges of coins like this leaving them smooth.
They could melt down the silver to sell, and the coin would still be worth face value. Thanks for putting up with my question. :)

that's ok, no bother for that's what this section is for. I do not know of any instance where filing or sanding down the edges would be a good idea on a coin that is supposed to have the "reeded" edges. I do remember that the old "V nickels without cents" had a smooth edge and when trying to pass them off as a $5 gold piece they would have to cut the reeding into the edges and plate them in gold.

you really should get yourself some kind of book or find the grading details of coins on the internet so that you use your own opinion and not just someone else's opinion who is attempting to sell you something. I would prefer that you do that, not only on my auctions, but for every coin that you are thinking about adding to your collection.
that also will allow for you to get more out of collecting coins than just paying what the price tag shows. :)
here is a site that will give you a head start on grading of coins, but each coin has its own little nuances that are used to grade it by what usually gets worn down first.

that is not a problem whatsoever. I know that if you are going to get involved with collecting coins, you will need all of what I told you, and then 100's of times more information.
have fun. <---- and that is the best advice that you will receive !! :)

I think what csj9112011 was referring to when he mentioned sanding was the way people used to shave the outer edges off silver or gold coins so as not to leave any noticeable damage. They would then save up enough of the shavings and melt down and sell it. This is the reason why coins are reeded now :) Awesome auction btw

there are so mnay different stories about how people used to try and make an extra 1 or 2 pennies in the old days :) thanks for the information... I love all of the little quirks and attempted fraud stories that come with collecting. far too many people do not care about all of that and it is their loss I do believe. and thank you for the comment on the auction as well
