This is crazy. Every time I bid it automatically says the same someone else has bid higher.

You can bid high and until someone bids higher than that amount, you maintain the high bid. You will notice after you bid the bid goes up, even if you still aren't the highest bidder.
Confused me as a new listian as well!!
