You are bidding on the Prickly Pear Cactus pads (sometimes referred to as "ears") shown in the first 4 pictures (others are web based). Yep, I got stickers in my hands taking the pictures!!!
Both pieces are a bit over 3". They will produce fruit and a yellow flower and fruit at maturity. Healthy and rooting until shipping.
Beware of it's tines. They are sharp and pointy!!!
This plants comes out of my healthy garden and flourishes in drought areas. VERY COLD HEARTY
You will receive the exact plants in the first 4 pictures.
SHIPPED WITH MINIMAL SOIL FOR SAFE SHIPPING. POT AND ROCKS ARE NOT INCLUDED.

They grow wild where I am in northern NM. I harvest the fruit (which are equally as prickly as the paddles). The fruit and paddles are harvested using salad tongs to avoid handfuls of stickers, lol. I make jelly, wine and candy from the juice of the prickly pear fruit (a.k.a. "tuna fruit"). The paddles (a.k.a. nopales) can be scraped free of thorns and sliced up, then sauteed in butter and garlic for a green bean type of food dish.
My question for you is: How do you ship these? What steps do you take to prepare them for shipping? (ex. wrapped in newspaper, bare root, box or bubble mailer, etc.)

I would love to spend an afternoon with you in the kitchen! Sounds delicious!
For me, the trick to easy and cheap shipping is not to list anything over 3" to 4" and bare root. Newspaper works well because it is more difficult for the tines to poke through, then I try to "cling wrap" with few layers to hold it together. Mostly though, I kinda play it by ear for each mailing. Do a "practice run" and I bet you find it's not hard to mail them at a reasonable rate. Boxes are good but they tend to cost too much to ship. Cheap poly or manila envelopes work great!

Ouch... I don't know why they call it a 'pear', perhaps because of the shape of the fruit...but they are prickly;) plants, not fruit... Anyway, awesome plant!!! I have it and I adore it... Whoever wins this auction, will enjoy this plant for years:)

It is delicious and messy, too. lol :) I usually gift goodies to my neighbors in the late fall.
Thanks for the info. I will do a practice run or two. If I find a great (& still cheap) method, I'll be sure to share it. I want to send them (along with cholla and hedgehog cacti) to my family in western NY, where they have no idea what they're missing out on.
