Description

The listing, 162 year old news paper The Providence Daily Journal dated March 31, 1854 - Free Shipping! has ended.

Step back in time more than a century and a half by reading this March 31, 1854 edition of The Providence Daily Journal. This is the entire newspaper not just clippings. It is 4 pages long on two sheets of 7 columns of tiny print. This was the typical style of that era.

Newspapers printed after 1799 and prior to 1860 are considered "Antebellum Papers" and were printed on naturally acid free "rag linen" paper so they held up much better than our newspapers of today. There are no illustrations other than a few block prints of ships and trains but that is also typical of this era of Antebellum papers since illustrations didn't become popular until several decades after this paper was printed.

This one is only slightly yellowed. It has been folded. It has been stored out of sunlight. There are no missing pieces and all editorial is present. The edges are nearly perfect on this piece with no jagged or uneven sides except for the inner binding edge which is also typical. There is an extra bit of paper on the bottom corner which is a printing error made by the printer on March 31st, 1854. This paper is a nearly pristine example of a 19th century publication.

There are classified ads, advertisements with prices, and many fascinating articles.

It measures 24" by 18.5" (perfect for a poster frame so it won't be expensive to mount and display - no preserving needed since it's printed on acid free paper).

Bidding starts at zero and shipping is FREE! It will be shipped securely with tracking and insurance. It has been folded in the past and it will be shipped that way without causing a change in condition.

This is NOT a reprint or reproduction. This is an original newspaper, GUARANTEED.

Wow, how is it still so white & crisp after 162 years?

It's been stored in the dark and has never been displayed. Sunlight will make it darken somewhat but rag linen paper didn't yellow like today's commercial paper. I don't recommend hanging it in a sunny room. It would be better off displayed in an interior room. Thanks for asking.

Why is the paper so white

It's been stored in the dark so it's not been exposed to much light at all although it's not "white". I also took the pics in natural sunlight in front of a glass door. Rag linen paper didn't "yellow" like the cheap stuff that's used today. I do not recommend exposing it to light after its framed. It should retain its natural color if it's displayed in an interior room. Thanks for asking!

Wow.... awesome to learn about "Antebellum Papers". I had never heard of those before. I too, was wondering how it stayed so white (but read the post). How amazing .... & geez that's some tiny print, indeed. Definitely watching this 1.
