It might leave a slight dust. Not as much when I first got them. I don't think there will be any shards.

I'd say sort of in between. They aren't rough, but not totally "tumbled" and shiney like most stones. When I received them, I had to wipe them all down carefully with a slightly damn cloth. They were a bit dusty. I just love these. I don't think I could part with more then one stick, maybe two thin sticks.
