Epiphyllum or "Orchid Cactus" have some of the most beautiful flowers ranging from 5" to more than 8" in diameter. "Strictum" is a species, not one of the hundreds of different hybrids with red, pink, white, yellow and multicolor forms. Most forms have tiny, hair-like needles on the new leaves but these typically fall off as the leaves mature so gloves are seldom necessary when handling the larger leaves. Once one of these plants bloom for you it will be "love at first sight".

The leaf cuttings should be planted with lots of humus, and a hanging basket would be ideal. Like most cactus, don't provide much water until it roots. In the spring and summer it will need adequate moisture but it is recommended that the soil be allowed to dry for a couple of weeks before watering again. It cannot withstand any freezing weather and will do best if kept above 45 degrees F. This would make an excellent container plant in colder climates. It will do best in bright shade but can take some direct sun in the morning before it gets too intense. More light in the early spring will aid blooming. Epiphyllum can bloom from spring until fall.
