Instructions
1. Remove the lemon seed from the lemon and wash it with water to remove any sugar.
2. Plant the seed a half-inch deep in a pot filled with potting mixture. Lightly water the soil and cover the top of the pot with plastic wrap to keep the soil and seed moist. Check the moisture in the soil daily. Add additional water when the soil begins to dry out. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
3. Place the potted seeds in warm location until the seeds germinate. This can be in a warm garage, on top of a refrigerator, or in another warm spot. Germination will occur around two weeks after planting. It is not necessary to provide light until after germination.
4. Transplant the lemon tree seedling when it is 6 to 12 inches tall. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball of the tree. Wash the off the root ball with a gentle stream of water to expose the outside roots. This allows the roots to come in immediate contact with the new soil and begin new growth.
5. Set the tree in the hole and fill halfway with soil. Water the new soil and allow it to settle. Finish filling the hole and water thoroughly. Fill with additional soil if any settling has occurred.
6. Water the tree every few days during the first two weeks and gradually increase the watering to a week apart during the following two months.
7. Fertilize the tree by dividing 1 cup of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) into three or four applications. Increase the fertilization to 2 cups in the second year and 3 cups in the third year.
